Flight
I’m writing this newsletter from giant metal bird in the sky. That’s pretty cool. Despite the fact that I’m thousands of feet in the air and it’s freezing cold outside of my window, I’m safer than I would be in a car.
I’ve always been amazed by planes and loved flying. Even though I’ve gotten to fly dozens and dozens of times over the last few years, the novelty doesn’t go away. Every time I board a plane, I like to tap the outside of the plane, thinking that I’m leaving behind a few skin cells that will disperse through the sky somewhere.
Planes are filled with contradictions. We’re doing the action culturally considered the most freeing, flying. Yet, we are trapped in small seats and have the most restrictions on what we can do. We’re unable to reach our friends and families through our devices, yet we’re bound together with a bunch of strangers headed to the same place as us.
The world is different on an airplane. Movies are more exciting, food is worse, and a cup of soda seems like the most novel thing in the world. The bathroom is terrible, your feet swell up and you never have enough leg room. A loud hum fills up all of the space in your head and ears. But, you look outside a window and you can see the world in a way that was impossible for most of human history.
Flights also hold power in their implication of what’s next. Whether it’s going to a new place or heading home, a flight is always exciting in its own way. As a homebody, nothing gets me as jazzed as the prospect of going home. As a spry youth, I’m always excited to see the world.
I’m blessed to have many opportunities to fly and I hope I never tire of it.
