Splash No. 83
A New Chapter
The end has come! After 179 job applications, 30+ interviews and many months of searching, I’ve finally found a job. In a few weeks, I’ll start working as a full-time Product Designer for a company called Fleetsmith in San Francisco. It’s a small startup slated to grow tremendously, and I’m super excited to join the team and work in a fast-paced environment!
I booked a weeklong trip to San Francisco a month ago, thinking that it would either be my last time in the city before I either moved there or moved somewhere else. WhileI was booking my flight, I was still in the midst of job applications, uncomfortable in the uncertainty of it all.
Now that I’m here, I realize that I’m just experiencing a preview of what’s to come. I’m staying in the Mission with my brother like I always do. As I wander the streets aimlessly, I see things that evoke memories in the spaces around me. In the restaurants and the shops, I see the surprise birthday dinner we threw for my brother two years ago. I see the first tour of San Francisco I had with my brother when he first moved out here. I remember many many burritos and even more cups of coffee that fueled my first experiences with this city. At the same time, I see unfamiliar spaces, unexplored places. I see all of the locations that could be home to my memories when I become a resident here.
After months and months (and months…) of waiting to figure out where my future will take me, I finally know that I’ll be living and working in San Francisco. I’ll soon leave behind Atlanta, a city that holds nearly all of my closest friends, most of my family and my favorite foods. I’m about to lose almost all familiarity in my life. Instead, I’ll get to live in the same city as my brother again, the only reason I’ve made it this far in my career. I’ll meet a bunch of new people and re-invent myself as I start to carve out a niche in this new city.
