Isn't it insane how nature has the capacity to change us just like that, by mere witnessing?

I recently read Byung-Chul Han's Saving Beauty:

"As opposed to beauty, the sublime does not cause an immediate feeling of pleasure ... the subject is shocked and overwhelmed by it. ... There is something there which shakes, an inner turmoil, which questions me and appeals to me: You must change your life."

Do you feel this was sublime to you?

i think so! but this is also how i’ve thought of my experiences of what i understand as “true beauty” — curious to understand how han defines beauty 🤔

Yea, it's a philosophical text so it gets a bit pedantic. But he defines beauty as that which is generally smooth and pleasing, non-confrontational.

The sublime of course is also is beautiful in the everyday definition of the word, but specifically it entails a type of beauty that is shocking. Not to say that smooth beauty is bad, but more to say that we are really out of touch with the sublime and have lost our ambitions to create beauty that changes rather than pleases.
